School Board
recommends postponing salary increases,
Aronowitz says “I don’t think so”
“Our position is
clear. The District has to fund our contract,” UTD President Karen
Aronowitz said after learning of the recommendation made by the members
of the School Board on Monday.
In a 5-2 vote, with 2 members absent, the School Board approved a
recommendation for the District to postpone the step raises and salary
increases scheduled for the 2008-2009 school year.
“After the
protracted battle that this Superintendent forced upon the School Board
over our insurance, the first place he goes again is after teachers'
negotiated salaries? I don’t think so,” Aronowitz said.
The recommendation
came during a budget workshop held by MDCPS, where they discussed the
budget for the coming school year.
“Time and time
again, the District clearly stated that their first priority in the
budget planning was to respect their commitment to the collective
bargaining agreement,” Aronowitz said. “We have heard this
repeatedly.”
The District says
cuts are needed in order to balance their budget.
“The District can
find ways to balance their budget without touching our contract,”
Aronowitz said. “It is all about choices.” |
